InterTech Science Park is a major economic development initiative sponsored by the Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana (BRF). The BRF was established in 1986 in response to the collapse of the oil industry with a goal of diversifying the region's extraction-based economy to include knowledge-based industries.
With Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport and three major private hospitals located within one-half mile of each other, local civic leaders sought to leverage these considerable medical assets to attract and grow a life science industry. The Foundation's mission is to pioneer a knowledge-based regional economy by cultivating and attracting life science enterprises and related technologies.
The BRF spent its early years developing the Biomedical Research Institute to advance LSU Health Sciences Center 's research capacity. In 1996 the Foundation initiated planning to establish a regional technology center. A business plan for InterTech Science Park was completed in 1997, and implementation began in 1998. The Park is supported in part by a 16-year ad valorem property tax millage from the Caddo Parish Commission. |
